Alex Vogel is a pianist, teacher, and lifelong explorer of sound & music. His journey with the piano started over 15 years ago, not in a conservatory, but in the quiet corners of curiosity. He taught himself to play, no sheet music, no rigid rules, just a deep fascination for how emotion can turn into melody through your own hands. That same curiosity eventually became his teaching philosophy.Over the last 5 years, he has been helping students unlock their musical voice through a method he developed himself, one that doesn’t rely on traditional notation, but on understanding music from the inside out. You will dive into chords, scales, notes, and expression, the true language behind every song, creating the ability to improvise.Whether you’ve never touched a piano before or you’ve been playing for years, his goal is simple: to help you play freely, creatively, and with feeling. Music should never feel like homework. It should feel like coming home.
Alex first came into contact with the piano about fifteen years ago, in quite an unexpected way. It all began with a single video game. Each time the game launched, a beautiful piano piece played in the background of the main menu. Captivated by the melody, Alex often found himself ignoring the game entirely, simply sitting and listening whilst enjoying, imagining what it might feel like to play those notes.Eventually, that curiosity turned into action. He bought his first keyboard and set out to learn that very piece. To his surprise, the process came naturally, and the song was learned far faster than expected, without reading sheet music. From that moment, he realized you don't need a background in music and have any musical knowledge or know theory. Soon after, the piano became a true passion and hours passed effortlessly while learning and playing the music he loved.Later, Alex began playing on his grandfather’s grand piano, where he learned about the pedals, the touch, and the responsiveness of real weighted keys: an entirely new world compared to the small 61-key keyboard he started on. In time, he acquired his first stage piano, which remains his main instrument to this day.For Alex, the piano isn’t just an instrument, it’s a language, a place to relax, focus, channeling his emotions through musical expression. Teaching has become his way of sharing that same spark and passion that began with a single game soundtrack all those years ago.
Alex’s way of teaching and playing the piano is modern, personal, and rooted in real musical understanding. It moves beyond the traditional path of endless sheet music and notation. While he deeply respects that classical approach and recognizes its beauty, Alex believes there’s a more natural and intuitive way to connect with music.Method
His method focuses on notes, chords and scales: the essential building blocks of all music, all while developing the student’s ear, creativity, and musical intuition. Rather than just reading notes from a page, students learn to understand what they play, to hear what fits, and to feel the natural flow of the music, making them able of improvising.Personal & Effective
Each lesson is designed to be personal, enjoyable, and effective. Alex doesn’t promise quick results, because learning the piano isn’t about speed, it’s a journey of a lifetime, unique to every student, where progress unfolds at one’s own rhythm as the music leads the way. This approach is built for the long term: providing a strong foundation, a clear sense of growth, and a deep understanding of how music works. It simplifies complex theory, helps students truly grasp harmony, and encourages the freedom to express themselves through the keys with the most beautiful style there is: improvisation.
Before lessons begin, even before a trial session, Alex likes to first connect personally with each student. This conversation helps clarify musical goals, experience level, and what the student hopes to achieve on their piano journey. Every pianist is different, and understanding those details ensures the lessons are fully tailored to the individual. What do you need?
Students are encouraged to have at least a digital or stage piano with 88 weighted keys and a sustain pedal for proper practice at home. An acoustic piano works perfectly as well and for those who own both, it’s truly the best of both worlds.
Lessons at Alex’s home are taught on a stage piano, not an acoustic one.Location & Time
Depending on the student’s needs and preferences, lessons can take place at Alex’s home in Dordrecht or at the student’s location, most preferably in the mornings during weekends and evenings during the week. Tuesday morning also works.Prior knowledge?
No prior piano or theory knowledge is required, as students of all ages and skill level are welcome. Alex teaches piano in pop, jazz, and classical styles, with a particular passion for jazz and improvisation, where creativity and musical freedom meet.Lessons are available in both Dutch and English.
